On the engineering side Chevy has trimmed a tidy 300 lbs. from the platform while increasing the wheelbase almost 4", mostly to add useful rear seat space as well as smoothing the ride. Under the hood there are two new turbo four-cylinder engine choices. A 1.5 liter with 160 HP that should cover typical driving needs well and a dynamic 2.0 liter version with 250 HP that was fitted to our test car. This motivator proved very energetic driving thru a new 8-speed automatic that shifted crisply and helped the Malibu deliver 22 city/32 hwy MPG per the EPA ratings. Overall refinement was at a high level and you will enjoy the conventional automatic a lot more than any of the competitor's CVT transmissions.
Dropping in to the interior you'll find a refined look that is a clear step up for the class. A well designed, very contemporary dash offers a useful and not intimidating interface based around a central 8" touchscreen that mostly did what was asked of it without confusion. The front seats were comfy enough and the rear now boasts good leg and headroom, very competitive in the category. Out back there's a large and useable trunk with almost 16 cu ft. of cargo room.
