When my father passed away, my mom asked me if I wanted his
old 1966 Chevy pickup. My sister turned
her nose at the offer as she never rode in it as she thought the Chevy was too
plain and really couldn't handle the stick.
Of course, I jumped at the chance and drove my new 2015 Chevrolet
Silverado 1500 with a trailer to pick it up.
Arriving at the old farm, I found it under an oily tarp and
jacked up on cement blocks. It had been
sitting there for over 20 years. This
Chevy C-10 was a sight for sore eyes, but it was in really great shape and of
course reminded me of the great talks I had with my dad traveling down the old
farm roads. It still stands as a
testament to the qualities that once made the American Automotive industry the
envy of the world.
The Chevy C-10 was just a plain- Jane work truck with an
in-line six and a three-on-the-tree transmission. This old pickup still had character and style
and was the best seller in the day as my Silverado is today. This vehicle
dominated the pickup market place during its era of the sixties as the
Chevrolet pickups do today. When the two
pickups were parked side by side, you can imagine why they were and are so
popular. When I opened the door of the
"66" and slid into the original vinyl bench seat in the very Spartan
cabin, I remembered the steering wheel.
It was huge and could have belonged in a ship. It’s one safety feature
was a set of safety belts that maybe would help you from crashing into the
metal dashboard. The one option my Dad
paid for was the AM radio, which still worked.
The pickup had the tiny 15-by-5.5 inch wheels. But, the ride was plush in yesterday’s
standards. Thanks to soft coil springs.
Chevrolet didn't disappoint the pickup drivers over 50 years ago and
they continue to please the drivers today.
Today's Silverado 1500 is still among the top selling
pickups and are not being used just for the ranchers, but for soccer moms and
their precious cargo. The new Silverado
is known for its responsive handling and an interior that is as quiet as a top
line luxury automobile and is more spacious.
Like the 66, the controls are simple and easy to use, but much more high
tech. Remember the 66 only had the radio
and heater control and the air conditioning was rolling down the windows. Unlike the small engine of its ancestor, my
2015 Chevy Silverado has the 5.3-liter V8 that delivers a very respectable 16
MPG overall that is driven by a smooth eight-speed transmission. A real big
difference from the 66's three speeds. I
must say that my wife loves our Silverado and it really is a head turner in the
neighborhood.... like the 66 when we drive it on weekends.
